Basantpur/Bihar / India

Flood relief for 1,200 families in the Basantpur block/Bihar

On 18 August 2008, a dike of the river Kosi in Nepal has broken leading the Kosi back to its ancient bed by this flooding thousands of villages in the countryside of Nepal and Bihar/India. The floods surprised the people during the night, so that there was little time to escape. Many people could only save themselves by climbing on trees and buildings. Over 1,000 villages have been severly damaged or completely destroyed by the water, at least 300,000 houses are reported to be damages or destroyed. Up to 3 million people are directly affected by the floods, many of them camping in make shift emergency camps along the side of the river.
It is expected, that people will be confronted with a situation of more or less permanent flooding for the next 3 to 6 months. Repair of the dike can only begin after the water level has turned low, which will probably not be the case before November 2008.

Basantpur Block was among the first areas to be flooded by the Kosi. The block is harbouring 94 villages and is located in the Supaul District, directly at the Nepalese boarder. The population has constructed provisional camps on one the dike in the border area. Currently an estimated number of 10,000 until 15,000 families are waiting for support in this area alone. People have lost all their belongings in the floods. Now they are in desperate need for help. Especially safe drinking water, emergency shelter, clothes, cookware basic, hygiene artiles and health support are needed. Due to the fatal sanitary circumstances and the varying water level, there is a high risk of epidemics.

  • Supporting 1.200 families to sustain their health especially by providing safe drinking water and minimum shelter material.
  • Reaching 1.200 displaced families with essential relief items.
  • Procurement and distribution of relief items to 1,200 families (ca. 7,300 persons) in the provisional reception camp of Kataya in Basantapur Block.
  • Distribution of portable family water filters, water storage containers, cookware, kerosene cookers, blankets, material for emergency shelters (tarpaulins and bamboo)and mosquito nets.
  • Selection of the most vulnerable families to distribute the relief goods.
  • Training of the women in the handling of the supplied water filters, save cooking with kerosene cookers and the use of oral rehydration solution (ORS)in case of diarrhoea.
