Additional income thanks to peanuts cultivation

The hinterland of Aceh Utara in North Sumatra has suffered from a thirty years conflict between rebel groups and the government. Only since 2005 there is peace in this area. The results of the conflict are still obvious. Education and business skills couldnt develop here as in other regions. Most of the small farmers live from the traditional rice farming in the low land areas.

But from the traditional rice farming they hardly can live and the farmers often cannot pay all the living cost for their families. An additional income would relieve this situation and help to pay for urgent needs and to invest more in childrens education and other family care requirements.

Due to this fact Malteser International in cooperation with the local partner NGO IKAPEDA and three farmer groups - supports the peanuts production in uncultivated farming land in higher areas with technical and financial assistance, organisational and business trainings and the establishment of a revolving fund scheme for a long term perspective. The direct beneficiaries are three farmer groups with 99 individual farmers and their families.
  • To contribute to an additional and stabilized income for small farmers and their families by diversification of agriculture products (peanuts), extension of uncultivated farming land and the establishment of a revolving fund scheme.
  • Based on the prior assessment the main activities are: Organisation of farmers into peanuts production groups;
  • Vocational trainings; business trainings (management, marketing, etc.);
  • Establishment of a revolving fund scheme;
  • Technical advice and support during of the cultivation of peanuts during the first production season.
