Reconstruction, School Containers, Support of local relief agencies, small project funds help for widows, traumatised children and the ill

In the early morning hours of 26 December, the devastating earthquake cost the lives of 30,000 people; more than 85,000 lost house and property. Around 5,000 children were made orphans, of which 1,800 lost both parents. The earthquakes epicentre was located in the heart of Bams centre. 90% of all buildings were destroyed; apart from residential buildings, also schools, hospitals and public facilities were hard hit.

Even months after the earthquake, the majority of the population still lives in tents or temporary shelters. School lessons are conducted in school containers, those who are ill, must traverse up to 200 km to the provincial capital of Kerman for treatment. Numerous Iranian charity organisations from Bam and further afield are engaged in providing for the affected populations needs. Together with these organisations, Malteser International offers its aid to Bams population.
  • Help for the most needy in Bam, e.g. widows, orphans and the ill and injured.
  • Support for self-help initiatives of the local population to aid needy neighbours by strengthening abilities in project management and professional training as well a support of small projects through the project fund.
  • Enabling schooling under normal conditions for Bams traumatised children, implementation of schooling in containers until schools have been reconstructed.
  • Re-implementation of the treatment for Thalassemie patients in particular through the blood transfusion centre in Bam.
  • Malteser International gives advice to around 35 local relief agencies with regard to planning and implementation of relief projects to the benefit of Bams most needy.
  • Relief projects of local organisations are supported through a small projects fund. Supported projects are, for instance, taking care of traumatised children in groups, the organisation of summer camps for children in temporary shelters, help for widows, collection of rubbish in destroyed streets, help for those who suffer depression and drug addiction.
  • Sustainable reconstruction: reconstruction is planned for a primary school building with 5 grades as well as the blood transfusion centre in Bam.
  • Malteser International erected 20 school containers in the Spring of this year in which around 700 primary pupils are educated in two shifts. Sun blinds fixed to the containers for protection will continue to serve children after the reconstruction of permanent school buildings as an open gymnasium.
  • In the emergency relief phase, search and rescue hounds searched for survivors. Four basic medical kits for the treatment of thousands of injured people were made available to the hospitals in the region.
