Tsunami South and Southeast Asia: Rehabilitation of the village Ban Bansak
The sub-district Ban Muang in Southern Thailand consists of eight villages, four of which have been severely affected by the tsunami on 26 December 2004. Ban Bansak is one of these villages. In its surroundings 1,200 people lost their homes. In Ban Bansak itself about 500 people were affected.
The tsunami destroyed 93 out of the 250 houses completely. 62 people from this village died. A part of the homeless people fled immediately into the mountains and found shelter in a refugee emergency camp up there, where initially 500 people lived in the open air. Many even lived on the plain floor, since they could not even rescue covers to protect them against dust and sun nor mats to sleep on, from the debris.
In the context of emergency relief Malteser have provided food, char, blankets, cloths, cooking items, tent covers and water jars. This refugee camp has been dissolved, by now. The 500 people live in very cramped, temporary emergency shelters. For the provisional accommodation Malteser provided the water supply. The refugees are no longer in immediate danger. Hence it is important now to enable the inhabitants of Ban Bansak to return to their normal lives and rehabilitate their destroyed village.
Malteser will build 30 stilt houses including the necessary water supply to return their homes to the inhabitants of Ban Bansak. The necessary materials for the construction is purchased on the local market of Phan Nga or of the province Phuket to stimulate the regional economy. The local population is employed for the rehabilitation works and receive a salary. The construction works have begun in February and take about three to four month.
- Aim is to achieve permanent resettlement of the tsunami victims in their village Ban Bansak. Through fast provision of living space, clean water and sanitary facilities living conditions of the people are substantially improved and illnesses prevented.
- Supplying the 500 homeless tsunami victims with food and vital consumables.
- Reactivate fountains by exhausting sand and salt
- Building 30 houses on concrete stilt constructions for 150 People in Ban Bansak
- Income generating measures by integrating the population in construction works
