Earthquake Relief in Mexico

The Mexican Association of the Order of Malta has been caring for the wounded and sick after two devastating earthquakes hit Mexico in September. Less than two weeks after an earthquake struck Oaxaca on September 7 killing over 100 people, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocked Mexico City on September 23. In total, more than 400 people lost their lives, hundreds more were injured and thousands were homeless.

The Mexican association boasts a vast network of about 2000 volunteers, including doctors and nurses. After the first earthquake in the state of Oaxaca, over 500 volunteers provided first-aid medical care to 350 people and distributed 5,000 food kits. Similar aid measures are to be deployed in the Mexico City area, after the second earthquake.

Malteser International will support the Association's humanitarian efforts in providing medical care and distributing food. “The association of the Order of Malta in Mexico currently needs donations in order to buy medicines, food, hygiene kits and blankets," says Timo Nikolaus, Malteser International’s Project Manager for Mexico.

With over 2,000 volunteers working in the fields of health, nutrition, emergency and disaster prevention, the Mexican Association of the Order of Malta has been active in the Mexico City and other federal states since 1990. Malteser International has supported its activities since the severe flooding that occurred in the state of Tabasco in October 2007.

We are urgently calling for donations to support relief efforts for the people affected in Mexico
