Cologne. Malteser International is appealing to the general public to make donations for the needy in Africa. Around 24 million people on the continent are currently facing starvation and their situation is becoming increasingly critical. “Climate change is not solely responsible for the current hunger crisis. Violent conflict, unequal distribution, and poor governance are also contributing factors.” said Sid Peruvemba, Vice-Secretary General of Malteser International. “In order to tackle these issues, we are therefore committed to working through our partners to bring positive changes where necessary. However, the immediate challenge is providing aid for survival, and for this, we are asking for support”.

While South Sudan is engulfed in civil war, large parts of northern Kenya have seen very low rainfall in the past months. Due to the threat of Boko Haram in Nigeria and Cameroon, many people have fled their homes and are unable to till their fields.

As part of the so-called “Berlin Appeal” in April, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel and Development Minister Gerd Müller warned of an impending catastrophe in Africa. At the same time, Malteser Germany pledged one million euros for the fight against hunger in Africa. But this is far from sufficient.

Malteser International is systematically expanding its emergency aid. Funds have been increased for existing aid projects in South Sudan and Kenya, and refugees from South Sudan are currently receiving assistance in Uganda and DR Congo. Experts have also been sent on fact-finding missions to Nigeria and Cameroon to examine quick and effective ways of providing assistance to the people. In order to gain an overall overview of the current situation, Douglas von Saurma-Jeltsch, president of Malteser International Europe will embark on a trip to Juba and Wau in South Sudan.

Malteser International has been active in six African countries for decades.
