Rome/Juba. This Sunday, November 19, marks the celebration of the First World Day of the Poor. Pope Francis announced the World Day for the Poor in his concluding message for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. To commemorate the day, the Pope will celebrate mass with people in need and those who assist them, after which he will have lunch with them in the Vatican audience hall. In support of this move, Malteser International is organizing a practical initiative for children in South Sudan; On Thursday, 16th November, Malteser International staff will have lunch together with homeless children, teachers, and about 2,000 pupils from Al Salam Primary School in Juba. In addition to the meal, which will begin with a prayer for people in need, the children will receive gifts of candies and cookies from Malteser International.

Many children in crisis-ridden South Sudan are forced to fend for themselves in order to find food. Repeated outbreaks of violence and resulting poverty mean a daily lunch meal is not a matter of course for many children in the world’s youngest nation. For more than a year, Malteser International’s school meals program in various schools within Juba has succeeded in improving the nutrition of more than 3,000 school children. Rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from, children can continue their education thereby securing their futures.

With more than 100 projects in over 20 countries, Malteser International is committed to serving the world’s most vulnerable people by providing them lifesaving aid.
