Cologne/Washington D.C. Malteser International signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, June 19 2018, with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to reach communities in need around the world. Under this MoU, Malteser International and USAID will seek to establish programs that promote human dignity, compassion, relief from suffering, aid to the poor, protection for the vulnerable, and refuge for those fleeing violence.
"This MOU lays the groundwork for us to establish viable, long-term solutions to create opportunities for vulnerable populations around the world to thrive," Ingo Radtke, Secretary General of Malteser International said. "An agreement with the world's largest aid donor is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our staf worldwide."
The agreement will focus on fostering peace, responding effectively to crisis, reducing poverty reduction, fighting human trafficking and developing youth.
In his remarks during the signing ceremony, Mark Green, USAID Administrator revealed his fascination at the long history of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and its efforts in service of the vulnerable. “We know that faith-based partners often have networks, historic relationships, and grassroots expertise that extend beyond our own. We also know that organizations like Malteser International are trusted voices in the communities where they work. They can carry lifesaving messages that will help beneficiaries take the right steps for both immediate assistance and long-term strengthening,” Green said. “The MoU will help increase the reach of USAID missions throughout Malteser’s historic and expansive networks on the ground.”
USAID is an independent U.S. federal government agency. It is the lead international development agency for the United States and receives foreign policy guidance from the Secretary of State. USAID is engaged in development assistance in over 80 countries worldwide.
