In the past few days, Malteser International staff distributed around one hundred emergency aid kits to people who had to leave their homes because of the floods. Photo: Malteser International

Hpa An. At least ten people have been killed and nearly 100,000 displaced following heavy flooding from monsoon rains in Myanmar. The flood which began last week hit eight states, including Kayin, Mon and Bago.

In Kayin, one of the worst hit states, Malteser International teams have been on the ground since Thursday, dispatching relief packages containing mosquito nets, toiletries, and other household items to over 90 affected households. Another 150 households in other areas affected received similar emergency relief supplies on Wednesday. This intervention will be financed by Germany's Relief Coalition, Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH).

The floods have submerged entire villages. As a result, thousands of residents have sought temporary shelter in evacuation centers. Malteser International plans to provide food supplies for people affected in the coming days, and will work with them to prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases like cholera.

Access to affected areas has been limited due to the flooding. Nevertheless, a Malteser International mobile medical team will be dispatched to cater to the health needs of those affected in the disaster. Malteser International's office in Hpa An was also flooded. No employees were injured.

This year’s monsoon season has brought devastating floods to many parts of Southeast Asia, including Laos, Thailand, and the Phillipines. The annual floods are not unusual but water levels are extremely high this year. Rainfall is still heavy and there is still no sign of an improvement in the situation.
