Cambodia

The Kingdom of Cambodia has been left marked by almost 30 years of civil war and genocide. Now, Cambodia is among one of the most underdeveloped countries in Asia. Malteser International’s work with the local population is based on many years of experience. From 1979 to 1992, Malteser International undertook a comprehensive program to provide medical care and combat leprosy in camps for Khmer refugees along the Thai – Cambodian border. The project was transferred to Cambodia in 1993 and continues in operation to the present. Between 1997 and 1999, Malteser International was responsible for the medical care of more than 25,000 Cambodian refugees in two camps in the north east of Thailand.

Since the return of the refugees to Cambodia in 1999, Malteser International has been engaged in providing basic medical care and supporting the further development of the health sector in the north west of Cambodia. A gradual shift from directly providing aid to a more structural focus is underway in line with changing needs. Aid measures on a village and community level, requiring close cooperation with local communities have gained an increasing importance, and today form the focus of our work. Malteser International is pursuing the goal of providing the population with access to quality medical care within the framework of an integrated, multi-sectoral approach.

A journey into Cambodia's past

On her project visit to Cambodia in October, Maria Hacker, our communications assistant spent some time in the province of Oddar Meanchey. Located in the northern part of the country, Oddar Meanchey saw political unrest in 1997 which triggered mass refugee movement into Thailand. After the end of the conflict, Malteser Germany and later Malteser International provided medical care to the returning refugees in the area. Here, Maria tells us about her impressions as she gained an insight into the country’s precarious past.
