Psychosocial support with the Nexus approach

The war in Ukraine is leaving more than visible scars. Millions of people are traumatized by the terrible events they have had to live through. Many lost family members and friends. In the embattled areas near the front lines, people live in constant fear of being shot at. Those who left their home villages and towns had to abandon their homes and flee. All of these are stressful and traumatic experiences that take time and professional support to process.

Since 2015, we have been working with Malteser International in Ukraine to provide psychosocial support services for those affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine. With the nationwide war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the need for psychosocial support has risen sharply. To reach more people with our services, we have expanded the existing program. The project, launched in 2023 and funded by the BMZ and AA, builds on the findings of several years of work in Ukraine and, thanks to the Nexus approach, offers both acutely necessary humanitarian aid and a shift to sustainable solutions in structure-building transitional aid. In addition to improving the physical and psychosocial well-being of the war-affected population in Ukraine, the project also aims to provide relief supplies (link to 3549 here) and strengthen the capacities of partner organizations.

Meeting the acute basic needs (incl. MHPSS) of people affected by the war in Ukraine and supporting organizational development.

We provide psychological and psychosocial support in centers, through mobile teams, on- and offline, nationwide.

Our activities consist, among others, of:

  • Offering mental health services in various digital and face-to-face formats
  • Treatment of patients with specialized MHPSS services (e.g., survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, ex-combatants)
  • Stress management and burnout prevention services for healthcare professionals
  • Medical and psychological first aid courses for the civilian population
