Read moreOften called the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is a country of remarkable beauty, resilience, and diversity. While it has made significant social and economic progress in recent years, many communities, particularly in rural areas, continue to face challenges such as limited access to clean water, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods.
Uganda is also home to one of the world’s largest refugee populations, hosting people displaced by conflict and instability from neighbouring countries, especially South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Guided by one of the most progressive refugee policies globally, the Ugandan government continues to welcome those seeking safety, integrating them within host communities.
Malteser International supports both refugees and their Ugandan hosts by strengthening access to health services, water and sanitation, and livelihood opportunities helping communities recover, adapt, and build dignified futures.
Since 1996, our work in Uganda has been about building hope and resilience for the most vulnerable. Focusing on water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH), health, and food & nutrition security, we partner with over 10 national organizations to create lasting change.
We mainly serve refugee settlements in West Nile and Southwest Uganda, plus communities nationwide, with a strong emphasis on refugees from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo through WASH and other interventions. In Kampala, working with hospitals, government agencies, and health sector partners, we have made a meaningful impact in Emergency Medical Services, physiotherapy, and support for people living with disabilities.
In 2025, Uganda remained Africa’s largest refugee-hosting country, with over 1.9 million displaced people seeking safety. Malteser International in Uganda continues to support refugees and host communities through integrated health, WASH, and livelihood programs to save lives, restore dignity, and build resilience.
