Humanitarian aid in Afghanistan

Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. For over 40 years, the people of Afghanistan have suffered from war, violence and terror. With the sudden withdrawal of the U.S. from the country in 2021, there was an unprecedented dynamic in the balance of political power that eventually resulted in the Taliban taking over the government. The political turmoil combined with ongoing conflict, one of the most severe droughts in the last 30 years, COVID-19, earthquakes, and the withdrawal of the international community have had a devastating impact on the people of Afghanistan. The collapse of basic services, financial systems and public services is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation, leaving nearly 60% of the population in need of humanitarian assistance.

How Malteser International is helping in Afghanistan

Until the end of 2007, Malteser International had its own office in Afghanistan and up to that point implemented projects in the fields of health, education and income-generation. Between 2008 and 2013, we sponsored an educational TV-program through a partner organization in Masar Sharif. In the winters of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, we worked with our partner organization Afghanischer Frauenverein e.V. to provide emergency supplies to Afghan returnee families and poor host communities in the Laghman region. We distributed food, warm blankets and gas cylinders for heating stoves to help people through the cold months. From 2018 to 2020, we jointly ran two health facilities in Kabul province with a partner.

Due to the political shifts in 2021, the hardship of many Afghans has once again increased immensely. Together with our partner Union Aid, we are helping 4,000 vulnerable and internally displaced families to get through the winter. Since October 2022, we have partnered with Union Aid to provide basic health services in Balkh Province, providing medical care to malnourished children and pregnant women.
