Devastation in Nepal following 7.8 magnitude earthquake

Death toll of over 1,300

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake shattered Kathmandu today. By Saturday evening, the death toll according to some outlets had reached 1,300. This number is expected to rise. Victims have also been reported in India, Bangladesh and on Mt. Everest, where the tremor caused a series of avalanches. The Nepalese capital was severely affected. Many buildings have collapsed and infrastructure has been heavily damaged.

An advance team from Malteser International is on the way to provide first-hand information from the scene. We are in contact with our partners on the ground and preparing an emergency response.

We have been working with our partners in Nepal since September 2012 and our hearts go out to all those affected.
