Sudan: The world’s largest humanitarian crisis

Sudan is currently facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world. Since April 2023, a brutal war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has left over 30 millions of people in dire need. The scale of displacement is staggering, with almost 12 million people forced from their homes, making Sudan the world’s largest displacement crisis. (Source: UNHCR, as of 11/2025)

The war in Sudan has severely damaged public infrastructure, including its healthcare system. Up to 80% of health facilities are no longer operational. There is a critical shortage of medical professionals. Disease outbreaks and acute food insecurity are compounding the suffering. Sudan’s people face extraordinary challenges, and urgent support is needed to address their basic needs.

Our emergency relief in Sudan

To strengthen Sudan's overwhelmed health system and support crucial medical care, Malteser International is sending a team of health experts to Port Sudan. Their mission is to train healthcare staff, many of whom currently possess only basic qualifications. The training will focus on life-saving skills such as resuscitation, treating severe injuries, and managing fractures. The operation is supported by Aktion Deutschland Hilft, Germany’s Relief Coalition.

In addition to our emergency relief efforts focusing on medical care, we, through our partner organization LM Sudan, will be launching aid activities focusing on improving the water, hygiene and sanitation in the southern states South Kordofan and Blue Nile state beginning in December 2025. This initiative will focus on cholera prevention and treatment, improving sanitation by constructing latrines, hygiene training for communities, and the rehabilitation of vital water structures. These measures are designed to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and enhance overall health conditions in these regions.

Sudan: Emergency aid team trains remaining hospital staff

Cologne/Port Sudan. In Sudan, torn apart by war between RSF paramilitaries and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), healthcare has also virtually collapsed. Up to 80% of healthcare facilities are no longer operational, and even hospitals-such as the one recently attacked in al-Fashir-are under threat. There is a severe shortage of medical professionals. To address this crisis, Malteser International is deploying a seven-member team of experts to Port Sudan. Their mission: to train the remaining healthcare staff, many of whom have only minimal qualifications. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic. Around 30 million people, more than half the population, are currently dependent on humanitarian aid.
