Cologne/Port Sudan. More than three years after the start of the war, the humanitarian situation in Sudan is catastrophic. Over half of the population depends on humanitarian aid, and around 20 million people currently lack adequate access to medical care. Many health facilities have been destroyed, while medical professionals have been killed or forced to flee to neighboring countries. From June 1–4, an emergency response team from Malteser International, joined by an infection prevention expert from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), will train nurses, doctors, and water and sanitation specialists in Port Sudan. The training will cover, among other topics, the recognition of cardiovascular diseases and the safe management of infectious diseases, including cholera and dengue fever, which pose major challenges for healthcare workers.
“The situation in healthcare facilities is alarming. Due to a shortage of skilled personnel, many hospital wards are understaffed and often rely on insufficiently qualified staff. To ensure that people can continue to receive life-saving care even under these difficult conditions, we will focus our training on essential, life-saving procedures,” says Edo Lihic, Head of Operations for Malteser International’s Sudan emergency response.
During the mission, the team will place particular emphasis on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as infection prevention and control to address critical gaps in emergency care and in the treatment of patients with communicable diseases in hospitals. The eight-member team includes paramedics, two doctors, logistics specialists, and experts in water and sanitation.
The mission is being carried out in close coordination with the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). Malteser International had already conducted a similar training mission in Port Sudan in December 2025. The current deployment is funded by Germany’s Relief Coalition (ADH).
