Humanitarian work in Europe
Although Europe is a relatively safe and prosperous continent that does not usually require international assistance in emergencies, Malteser International, in coordination with the Malteser network, always steps in when a particularly large emergency occurs.
For a long time, we supported people who suffered significant damage caused by the floods in Germany in 2013. At that time, floods destroyed a large number of homes in large parts of eastern Germany.
We also provide support to displaced persons who have been forced to leave their homes due to the conflicts in eastern Ukraine. Many of those affected have lost loved ones and fear further acts of war.
Our focus in Europe
Floods
In Europe, we are especially active in the area of flood relief. Heavy rainfall in recent years has caused flooding in some regions of Germany. Learn more about floods.
Help for Refugees
In Ukraine, many people have been forced to leave their homes due to conflict and fighting. That is why we are particularly committed to helping internally displaced persons in the region. Learn more about refugees and displacement.
How we help locally
In Europe, our work focuses on providing psychosocial support to displaced persons in Ukraine. Our flood relief efforts following the floods in 2013 have now been completed. Flood relief efforts in 2021 are being coordinated by Malteser Hilfsdienst e.V.
In 2013, Germany experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall, which resulted in widespread flooding. Those affected were particularly dependent on assistance with reconstruction and psychosocial support. During this time, we supported people with stress management services, health days, and meal services.
In Ukraine, we provide psychosocial support to people who have been displaced from their homes. Through our support in the form of counseling, training, and further education, we are helping to stabilize and improve the situation of the families affected.
