Our humanitarian aid in Yemen

Yemen has been facing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises for over a decade. More than 21 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. The ongoing conflict has displaced millions, largely destroyed the health system, and led to alarmingly high levels of malnutrition, especially among children and pregnant women. At the same time, security risks and bureaucratic barriers make access for humanitarian aid workers extremely difficult. International aid remains essential, however.

The long-standing conflict has also had a serious impact on the mental health of the population. Around 7 million people are suffering from mental health issues. Despite the great need for psychosocial support, only around 120,000 of those affected receive the help they need on a regular basis.

Malteser International has been working in Yemen since early 2025, with ADRA Germany and ADRA Yemen as local partners. Our work is focused on the governorates of Abyan, Taiz, and Lahj in the south of the country, where we support training in health facilities in the field of mental health.

Our work on mental health in Yemen

Together with ADRA Yemen and ADRA Germany, we are working locally to establish and expand training programs in mental health and psychosocial support. Our main target group is initially healthcare workers. Our aim is to remove the taboo surrounding mental health and raise general awareness.

Through a comprehensive analysis of existing structures and identified gaps, and in close coordination with relevant actors, we are determining where action is needed and which training formats are most urgently required for medical professionals. The aim is to empower and motivate health workers to actively promote better access to and higher quality mental health services. In addition, we will work with the Ministry of Health to standardize and professionalize training programs, revise existing modules, and develop new content. The long-term goal is to create a comprehensive curriculum that will enable uniform training in mental health and psychosocial support at the local level and ensure nationwide knowledge transfer.

Our project in Yemen:

The goal is to strengthen the health behavior of the population in the long term and to train medical personnel in standardized procedures. This should improve the quality of care and strengthen the Yemeni health system in the long term. We place a particular focus on mental health.

  • Develop, improve, and design training programs in mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS)
  • Standardize and professionalize training programs in mental health and psychosocial support for health workers
  • Transfer knowledge about mental health and psychosocial support within the country
