Our humanitarian aid in the Americas
Our work in North and South America focuses primarily on Latin America and the Caribbean. Most of our initiatives are coordinated from our regional office in New York (USA). Many Latin American countries are frequently affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. In the USA and the Caribbean, hurricane season poses a persistent threat to the population. As a result, we are especially active in disaster relief and prevention efforts throughout the region. These natural disasters have left many areas deeply impoverished, grappling with inadequate hygiene conditions and limited access to clean water. Compounding these challenges, the region is currently facing the largest refugee crisis in its history, driven by the mass exodus of Venezuelans to neighboring countries.
In the long term, our aid projects in the Americas seek to strengthen the resilience of local civil societies. We support communities in preparing for future disasters and securing access to food, water, and hygiene. Additionally, we actively back the efforts of the Order of Malta’s national associations and partner organizations.
Our work in the Americas
Haiti
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and is often hit by extreme weather events such as earthquakes. As a result, the people are dependent on aid before and after a disaster.
Colombia
Colombia, which has been politically unstable for decades, is experiencing the largest refugee crisis in the region. The country is also prone to earthquakes, floods, droughts, and forest fires.
Mexico
Rural regions of Mexico are particularly affected by poverty. In addition, Mexico is regularly hit by natural disasters.
Peru
Poverty and malnutrition are major threats to the population of Peru. Many people live on or below the poverty line, especially in the outskirts of Lima.
