From November 6th to 9th 2025, comprehensive cholera response training for German emergency medical teams will take place in Oestrich-Winkel, Hesse. The aim of the training is to jointly establish a rapidly deployable care unit for cholera patients.
In view of increasing and prolonged cholera outbreaks worldwide, the Association of German Emergency Medical Teams has decided to set up a rapidly deployable cholera unit.
This unit will consist of up to five treatment stations linked to local health facilities. The aim is to relieve the burden on local health care services during a cholera outbreak and to prevent severe cases of the disease through early treatment.
Practical training with international participation
The training is being organized by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in collaboration with Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH).
A large international group of trainers consisting of experienced specialists from Germany, the WHO Regional Office for Africa, and experts from partner countries such as Zambia and Ethiopia is designing the program and scenarios for the exercise. The training is supported by the German Red Cross, Pharmacists Without Borders, and Deathcare Germany.
Participants will practice the complete setup and operation of several treatment stations, including the necessary infrastructure. This will involve training in coordination, logistics, and communication, from setup to clinical care of patients.
Participants and location
A total of 21 representatives from five German Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) – Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, CADUS, humedica, Johanniter, and Malteser International, as well as network partner Pharmacists Without Borders – are taking part.
The training will take place in the Malteser International warehouse in Oestrich-Winkel. Members of the press will gain insight into the work of the EMTs, see the setup of the deployment sites with tents, technical equipment, and clinical supplies, and have the opportunity to interview the volunteer participants from the individual EMTs.
