On August 26, 2026, devastating flash floods swept through the border region between Nepal and China, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The exact number of fatalities remains unclear, while more than 1,300 people are currently reported missing (as of August 28, 2026).

The districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot have been particularly hard hit. Numerous villages have been destroyed or severely damaged. Homes, roads, and critical infrastructure have been washed away by torrents of water and mud. Many people have lost everything and are urgently in need of assistance. The humanitarian needs are immense: communities lack access to safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, food, and secure shelter.

Our project areas have also been affected by the disaster. For safety reasons, we have temporarily suspended our ongoing activities there. Together with our long-standing partner organizations, RSDC and KOSHISH, we are in close contact with the affected communities and are closely monitoring the situation as it develops.

In cooperation with our partner RSDC, we are preparing relief measures to support affected communities as quickly as possible. Your donation helps us provide rapid, needs-based assistance to people affected by the disaster in Nepal. Donate now and support our emergency response.

Our emergency relief: How we are helping after the flash floods in Nepal

Malteser International is initially providing €50,000 in emergency assistance. Together with our local partner organization RSDC, we will support around 900 people in the particularly hard-hit communities of Nuwakot District as an immediate first response. Our emergency relief focuses on improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services, as well as providing food assistance. Relief activities will be tailored to the evolving needs on the ground and implemented in close coordination with our partner.

Affected families will receive essential items including jerrycans for the safe storage of drinking water, water purification tablets, soap, dental hygiene products, towels, menstrual hygiene products, and underwear. These supplies will help reduce health risks in the affected communities.

In addition, food packages containing rice, lentils, cooking oil, flour, salt, and sugar will be distributed to families who have lost their food supplies and sources of income due to the flooding.

This response builds on a long-standing partnership in the region. For many years, Malteser International and its local partners have been supporting communities in Nepal to better cope with crises and strengthen their resilience to natural disasters.

Flash floods in Nepal: Malteser International provides 50,000 euros

Cologne/Nuwakot. The flash flood on 26 August struck numerous villages in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, causing severe damage to homes and vital infrastructure. The affected communities are particularly lacking access to clean drinking water, hygiene items, food and safe places to sleep. “Many particularly vulnerable families in Bidur have only limited means of coping with the aftermath of the floods on their own. Thanks to our long-standing work in Nuwakot and the trust placed in us by the communities, our local partner organization RSDC is now able to provide rapid assistance and deliver it directly to where it is most urgently needed,” says Istvan Toth, Head of the Emergency Relief Department at Malteser International.
