A year of impact: strengthening healthcare, livelihoods and climate resilience in Pakistan
For nearly two decades, Malteser International has been working in Pakistan, providing essential humanitarian aid and long-term development support. From the devastating 2005 earthquake to the catastrophic floods of 2010 and 2022, we have supported vulnerable communities and Afghan refugees in their times of greatest need. In 2024, our commitment to strengthening resilience, improving healthcare, and supporting sustainable livelihoods remained stronger than ever.
Our work in Pakistan continues to address pressing humanitarian needs while empowering communities for the future. Some of our key initiatives that are still ongoing in 2025 include:
- Healthcare and Nutrition Services: for crisis-affected people, ensuring access to life-saving treatment for thousands.
- Restoring Livelihoods and Climate Resilience: helping vulnerable communities recover from disasters and build sustainable futures.
- Support for displaced populations: providing vital services to those affected by migration, displacement, and violence.
Our achievements in 2024
In 2024 we successfully completed several impactful projects and brought meaningful changes to thousands of lives. Our emergency response initiatives focused on addressing the urgent needs of Afghan refugees and flood-affected communities, delivering healthcare, nutrition, and cash assistance where it was needed most.
- 67,960 individuals received primary healthcare consultations, including both refugees and host communities.
- More than 14,400 children benefited from pediatric healthcare services.
- Over 2,400 children under five were screened for malnutrition, ensuring early intervention and treatment.
- We provided Multi-purpose Cash Assistance to flood-affected households, helping families rebuild their lives.
- We improved Climate Resilience through infrastructure projects, protecting communities from future disasters.
Two lives transformed: Manaha and Wahida's story
Among those impacted by our work is Manaha, a 28-month-old Afghan refugee child, who struggled with acute malnutrition – a harsh reality for many displaced families. When Malteser International’s nutrition assistant identified her condition, she was enrolled in a nutrition program. With specialized supplements and improved feeding practices learned by her mother, Noorjana, Manaha experienced a remarkable recovery, gaining weight and strength. Noorjana expressed her deep gratitude, emphasizing the lifesaving difference Malteser International made in her daughter’s health and future.
Wahida (12) had been suffering from malaria, but due to local misconceptions, her family initially sought treatment from unqualified practitioners, worsening her condition. It was thanks to the intervention of Sherina, a Village Health Committee member trained by Malteser International, that Wahida’s mother brought her to a proper healthcare facility. There, Wahida received the correct diagnosis and treatment, leading to a full recovery. Her story underscores the vital role of community awareness in ensuring timely medical care.
A lasting impact through localization
In 2024, 62% of our interventions in Pakistan were implemented in partnership with local organizations. This approach ensures that our projects are not only effective but also sustainable, fostering resilience within communities and empowering local stakeholders to take charge of their futures.
As we continue our mission in Pakistan, Malteser International remains committed to delivering humanitarian assistance, strengthening healthcare systems, and supporting communities in building a more resilient future. With our dedicated teams and strong local partnerships, we will keep working towards a Pakistan where vulnerable people have the support they need to thrive.
Together, we have made a lasting difference in 2024 and together, we will continue building a healthier, more resilient future.
