After flash floods in Nepal: Malteser International expands psychosocial support

Cologne/Nuwakot. The full scale of the flash floods of 26 August is becoming clearer by the day: critical infrastructure has been destroyed, and more than 1,100 people lost their lives in the flash floods in the Himalayas. Survivors are struggling with the psychological impact of the disaster. Together with local partner organization KOSHISH, Malteser International is providing psychosocial support in the severely affected district of Nuwakot and is currently expanding these services. At centers for displaced people, affected people receive psychosocial counselling, psychological first aid, and trauma-informed support.

After nearly a decade of dedicated service, Malteser International bids farewell to Clemens Graf von Mirbach-Harff, who is stepping down from his role as Secretary General and Executive Director. Malteser International extends its sincere gratitude to Clemens Graf von Mirbach-Harff for his outstanding dedication, commitment, and the trust-based collaboration over the years. Going forward, Malteser International’s humanitarian activities will continue to be jointly led by Izabella Toth and Kees Zevenbergen.

Flash floods in Nepal: Malteser International provides 50,000 euros

Cologne/Nuwakot. The flash flood on 26 August struck numerous villages in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, causing severe damage to homes and vital infrastructure. The affected communities are particularly lacking access to clean drinking water, hygiene items, food and safe places to sleep. “Many particularly vulnerable families in Bidur have only limited means of coping with the aftermath of the floods on their own. Thanks to our long-standing work in Nuwakot and the trust placed in us by the communities, our local partner organization RSDC is now able to provide rapid assistance and deliver it directly to where it is most urgently needed,” says Istvan Toth, Head of the Emergency Relief Department at Malteser International.

Earthquake in Venezuela: Psychosocial Support for Those Affected

Cologne/Caracas. About a month after the severe earthquake in Venezuela, thousands of people are believed to still be buried under the rubble. Their relatives are staying in mostly makeshift tents next to the collapsed houses, hoping that the bodies will soon be recovered so they can bury their loved ones. “The strain on these people is almost unimaginable. For four weeks, they have been living next to the deceased. They know that their loved ones are no longer alive, yet they still cannot bury them. Psychosocial support for the grieving and deeply distressed survivors is now particularly important,” reports Jonas Jung, Emergency Relief Coordinator at Malteser International.
