Earthquake in Venezuela: Psychosocial Support for Those Affected

Cologne/Caracas. About a month after the severe earthquake in Venezuela, thousands of people are believed to still be buried under the rubble. Their relatives are staying in mostly makeshift tents next to the collapsed houses, hoping that the bodies will soon be recovered so they can bury their loved ones. “The strain on these people is almost unimaginable. For four weeks, they have been living next to the deceased. They know that their loved ones are no longer alive, yet they still cannot bury them. Psychosocial support for the grieving and deeply distressed survivors is now particularly important,” reports Jonas Jung, Emergency Relief Coordinator at Malteser International.

Earthquake Venezuela: Mobile Medical Units for Crisis Region

Cologne/Caracas. Malteser International’s Emergency Response Team arrived in the disaster zone over the weekend and has begun operations. “The situation on the ground is catastrophic. In fact, isolated rescues are still taking place. Absolute silence is required in the surrounding area to hear survivors in the rubble. The silence hanging over the destroyed homes moved me deeply. There are too few ambulances, and some of the injured are being transported improvised on motorcycles to nearby hospitals. There is a particular shortage of emergency medical equipment, medicines, and supplies for trauma care,” says Jonas Jung, Emergency Relief Coordinator at Malteser International, from La Guaira.

Earthquake in Venezuela: Team from Malteser International flies to crisis region

Cologne/Caracas. An emergency team from Malteser International will travel from Germany to Caracas on Saturday aboard a German Armed Forces aircraft to support relief efforts for people affected by Wednesday’s massive earthquake. "Since some airports in Venezuela have been destroyed, the opportunity to reach people as quickly as possible with the support of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is a tremendous help to us," says Jonas Jung, Emergency Relief Coordinator at Malteser International.
