Pakistan is considered a high-risk country that is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. The country is repeatedly hit by earthquakes, cyclones, floods and droughts, destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of families. In addition to the disaster-related challenges, Pakistan continues to be a refuge for one of the world's largest groups of displaced people. Instability in Afghanistan has led to a significant influx of Afghans into Pakistan over the past decades, especially since the regime change in August 2021.
It is estimated that over three million Afghans currently live in Pakistan. Given the large number of refugees, the difficult economic and political situation, inflation and increasingly devastating extreme weather events, such as the dramatic floods in 2022 and further severe flooding in 2024, the Pakistani population is facing many challenges and is in urgent need of support.
