Bright home, brighter future - Wafaa's Story
Wafaa, divorced mother of two, faced the challenge of providing for her family alone. A candle-making workshop empowered her with handicraft and business skills.
Read moreSeven years after the conclusion of large-scale military operations against the so-called Islamic State in 2017, the humanitarian situation in Iraq has improved considerably, with the notable decline in the number of people requiring humanitarian assistance from a high of 11 million people in 2017 to 2.5 million in 2022.
Since 2014 Malteser International has been seeking to serve and empower people affected by the ISIS insurgency in Iraq. Together with local partner organizations and thanks to the support of institutional and private donors, we have carried out humanitarian relief and transitional aid activities and successfully contributed to rebuild the region. In light of the transition from an acute humanitarian crisis to a protracted one, Malteser International in Iraq is also downsizing its program.
We will continue to coordinate with local authorities including the DNGO in Baghdad and Erbil and will further actively participate in coordination meetings like the German NGO Forum to advocate and lobby for the remaining people in need.
