Malteser International provides medical assistance to people in the border region

Cologne. Since November 1st, approximately 1.7 million Afghan refugees without valid papers are required to leave Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of people are stranded at the border with Afghanistan, waiting to cross into the country. There, they are receiving medical care from Malteser International. Many refugees have been living in neighboring Pakistan for decades.

"To support people in this difficult situation, we have sent doctors to the camps to provide medical care to the refugees. Additionally, we will deploy a mobile medical unit to assist in providing medical services to the people in six camps," says Markus Haake, the project manager for Pakistan and Afghanistan at Malteser International.

Since October 2022, we have been providing basic health services and care for malnourished children and pregnant women to Afghan refugees and host communities in the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. The establishment of three basic health stations in the region, the provision of healthcare services for mothers and children, as well as health and hygiene training, aims to improve the health and well-being of crisis-affected individuals.
